The death of a labourer in the Katni district brought about a change in my perception, and made it closer to the rebels. Though an optimist I could hardly make myself believe that the system, be it administrative or political is for the welfare of the weak and poor. There is something seriously wrong which needs immediate attention.
Madan Baba a labourer died of starvation after being on hunger strike. Most strikingly he was on strike because; he was not getting his wage for the works done under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
Decrepit Madan (55), worked at the pond construction work at Baragaon village under the Reethi Tehsil of Katni District. He worked under MNREGS from March 7 to 16 along with his wife, but the wage was delayed. Not just the wage was delayed, but he was insulted by the in charge post master, and sent back, when he went to the post office asking for his wage. The sarpach of the village assured him to pay Rs200, when he was on strike, but merely assured the hungry labourer was not even paid the mearge sum of Rs200, that too, was not to be paid as any help but was the just wage against the works done by him.
After his death on May25, the administration is as usual busy in white-washing. The administration has declared his death as normal.
It is really normal, it is normal in this country that a hungry man dies with the assurance of getting a meager amount of Rs200, and at the same time no action is taken against the officers like, the then collector of Sidhi district, Sukhbir Singh, who is found to involved in the anomalies to the tune of Rs9 crore, in the implementation of the NREGS in the year 2009. Despite the recommendation of the then Additonal Chief Secretary, Pradeep Bhargava finding him involved in the scam, the officer still enjoys his post.
Madan succumbed to hunger, to death, to this system, because he resorted to gandhian way of protest, but what if he would have taken up arms?
In that case also it would have been a normal incident, but with a difference. The administration busy in white-washing now would have the same thing then also. The difference rests with the fact that now the death of Madan, a petty labourer is a normal death of a normal man, then the death would have been the death of Madan the naxalite, bringing honour to the administration, to the officials who killed him.
What I desperately feel in this case is that the death of Madan went futile. He should have better died in an encounter as a naxalite.
At least it could have fetched some, honour and gallantry awards to the patrons of our system for hunting down a naxalite.
